Specialized Furniture Carriers Association Becomes AHFA Division

High Point, N.C. – The Specialized Furniture Carriers Association has become a division of the American Home Furnishings Alliance.

The group is comprised of more than 40 transportation and logistics companies that specialize in the home furnishings industry. The SFCA will keep its name but will be operated by AHFA.

Governance of the new division will be modeled after the governance of AHFA’s Suppliers Division, which includes volunteer officers and a volunteer board. David Purvis, AHFA’s vice president of information technology, manufacturing and human resources, will serve as the group’s executive director.

“This is an opportunity for SFCA to reorganize with the support of what we believe to be the strongest trade association in the furniture industry,” said Greg Skoog, senior vice president of Caldwell Freight Lines, who is serving as the transition president for the organization. “Bringing together these two organizations gives us the opportunity to consolidate our efforts, and everyone wins.”

Membership dues will range from $750 to $3,000 per year, depending on a company’s annual value of home furnishing shipments.

The SFCA announced the merger at AHFA’s 2009 Global Supply Chain Conference in July. Ken Miller, previously the executive director of SFCA, was honored during the meeting. Miller has played an active role in SFCA since its inception in 1986. Patrick Smith, president of Cargo Consolidation Services, presented Miller with a plaque recognizing his years of service to the group.

An organizational meeting for the new SFCA division of AHFA will be slated during the October High Point Market. Companies interested in membership should contact Purvis at dpurvis@ahfa.us.

The American Home Furnishings Alliance – located in High Point, N.C., and Washington, D.C. – is the largest association of home furnishings companies in the world and represents more than 240 leading furniture manufacturers and distributors, as well as nearly 200 suppliers to the furniture industry worldwide. To help consumers shop for home furnishings, AHFA offers a comprehensive, multi-brand product catalog on its website, www.findyourfurniture.com.
